“What impressed me most was the ability of Mass MEP to identify and assemble high-powered domain experts to conduct a truly multi-faceted assessment for their client. The fact that MEP tapped external resources based on the unique customer needs and did not simply rely on its own internal resources speaks volumes about the quality and effectiveness of this program.”

It has been said that Innovation tends to be random and unexpected. At MassMEP we have built a program that renders that myth “busted”. We have built a program that makes innovation happen through a transformative process.
Transformation in this context is best described as the “Maximization of internal innovation capabilities, in all aspects of the business.” This means systems, processes, services, markets, as well as products. The twin goals of productivity and innovation should be the guideposts for any business; they are essential to manufacturing. It is no longer enough to focus exclusively on optimizing; you must optimize and innovate simultaneously.
Applied in its broadest sense, Innovation is defined as being the application of new ideas to products, processes, and services in the pursuit of profits.
Over the past three years, fifty five (55) Massachusetts companies have participated in this program, maximizing internal innovation and productivity capabilities. This was accomplished by showing 1,028 engineers, scientists, and technologist how to support internally developed technologies.
The MassMEP Innovation Program helps businesses define their ability to successfully:
- Integrate new and innovative technologies
- Identify appropriate solutions
- Assist with technology transfer
- Develop product commercialization strategies
The program consists of three phases:
Phase 1 - Enterprise-wide Assessment and Roadmapping:
- Performing a gap analysis for benchmarking your business practices, production processes, and technology core competencies
- Developing a Strategic Technology Roadmap and a Professional Workforce Development Plan for your organization
"All you need is the plan, the roadmap, and the courage to press on." - Earl Nightingale
Phase 2 - Technology Matchmaking, Technology Transfer, and Professional Workforce Development:
- Utilizing the Strategic Technology Roadmap and the Professional Workforce Development Plan to match your company's needs with technologies available from other companies, universities, and federal laboratories to conduct the transfer of knowledge or technology assets
- Developing programs for incumbent professionals to integrate technology into your business
Phase 3 - Commercialization:
The Innovation Program brings bottom-line impact to your business by providing assistance in:
- Market research
- Business planning
- Marketing communications planning
Benefits
The initial economic results of an independent IMPLAN Economic Impact Survey, which surveyed about 35% of the 55 companies to date, show that these companies have:
- Created or retained 747 jobs that otherwise would not have existed
- Experienced, increased and retained sales of $17.1 million
- Spent $31 million on new investments
- Experienced $4.8 million in Cost Savings

Testimonials of Successful Innovation Implementations
"Working with the Massachusetts MEP Innovation Program was an integral component of our business strategy. Thank you for your assistance and technical expertise. We value the technology roadmap you helped us create that outlines the steps needed to progress from the present state to our desired future state. ISO Certification was absolutely necessary to continue growing MTD's micro molding business. The implications of ISO Certification are just starting to surface- the true ROI for MTD will occur over time."
-- Dennis Tully, Vice President of Engineering, Miniature Tool and Die
"The MassMEP Innovation Program encourages companies to find technology they don’t have and bring it in-house to increase the competency of its own staff, and that’s exactly what happened at Smith & Nephew Endoscopy. Our research and development staff is highly educated and innovative. The training Mass MEP helped us provide for them only enhances our organization and, I believe, gives us a competitive advantage not only as a medical device manufacture but as a Massachusetts employer."
-- Sally Maher, Vice president, Research and Development, Smith & Nephew Endoscopy
"The strategic recommendations developed by the MEP assessment team have been embraced by the H&V management team and are currently being implemented. For those companies struggling with age old paradigms and looking for an opportunity to transform themselves, the MassMEP assessment provides a rapid-fire and cost effective approach to setting the course for those efforts."
-- Doug Klauber, VP of Technology, Hollingsworth & Vose
