Local Elementary School Students Manufacturing Airplanes
MassMEP Teaches R.E. Shaw Elementary Students Quality Manufacturing Techniques by Building a Better Paper Airplane
On March 10, 2005, with the help of the Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP) and Associated Industries of Massachusetts, 450 students at the R.E. Shaw Elementary School in Millbury will learn how to build paper airplanes that even Howard Hughes would envy.
Utilizing the hands-on simulation of assembling a paper airplane, the MassMEP will demonstrate Lean Manufacturing techniques used on a production floor as part of the school's quarterly school wide project on manufacturing. Students from the 4th, 5th and 6th grades will learn about the history and economic impact of manufacturing and how Lean concepts are improving manufacturing.
Using the gym as a manufacturing area, paper airplanes will be built based on a standard manufacturing set up including testing and inspecting the finished product; and evaluating the process. After the first round, the students discuss how to improve the process and make adjustments to be used in the second round. The changes that are implemented from the discussion generate a higher quantity and better quality airplane. Skills like problem solving, logical thinking, cause and effect, teamwork, and work habits illustrated during the simulation can be applied to student's daily activities as well as their MCAS testing.
