WIBs & Talent Management
Great people are the secret to a company’s success. Equipment is equipment--it is the skill and knowledge of the employees that distinguishes one company from another.
There are plenty of applicants to go around, but there aren’t enough skilled manufacturing workers and the problem is getting worse. Sadly, the national cry from many employers has become a plea to just find a “warm body…anyone who’s breathing.”
The lack of a skilled workforce makes it difficult to maintain production levels just to meet current customer demands; and makes it almost impossible to modernize the very operations that are necessary to compete in a global economy and create or retain jobs.
Critical Occupational REadiness (CORE) trains people with little or no prior experience into entry level production jobs in a fraction of the time of traditional programs. This program provides an opportunity to train people for entry level jobs and position them for career ladders that allow long-term growth and higher earning potential.
MassMEP has trained over 400 individuals, with 73% entering employment within a quarter.
CORE is an intensely-focused practical skills, theory and hands-on curriculum that uses a process of both computer-based 3-D simulations and hands-on self-paced training modules. The program involves comprehensive training in shop math, blueprint reading and metrology, computer numerical control (CNC) machine milling and turning, as well as fundamental manufacturing skills.

Modules cover such topics as:
| • |
Basic manufacturing skills |
| |
| • |
Shop math concepts and terms |
| |
| • |
Mechanical drawings |
| |
| • |
Use of measurement tools |
| |
| • |
Quality control |
CORE training modules can be customized to the specific needs of the employer and the skill sets of the students.
Advanced manufacturing classes are also offered. Advanced manufacturing is experiencing a resurgence:
| • |
There is a decline in commodity production sectors. |
| |
| • |
There is a growth in high tech sectors, including jobs related to a new green economy. |
| |
| • |
Half of current industry workers are approaching retirement. |
| |
| • |
CORE provides a path for those who cannot enroll in a traditional college. |
